Lisbon2 in the Starting Blocks

Treaty of Lisbon

Today the Irish Government publishes the Twenty Ninth Amendment to the Constitution Bill 2009 to set up the conditions for the second Lisbon Treaty Referendum.

This means that today the Referendum Commission will be set up. The Referendum Commission is responsible for:

  • Explaining what the referendum is about.
  • Raising public awareness.
  • Encouraging people to vote.

This is an important step in the referendum process in Ireland. The bill will be debated in the two houses of the Oirecahtas (Irish Parliament) this week and then will go to the President for signature. The Referendum will take place in early October as it must take place with 90 days of the bill being passed by the Oireachtas.

  1. Helena Helena says:

The aims sound wonderful but will it be executed properly? When the UK government holds a referendum anywhere we get fancy leaflets saying how wonderful it will be if we agree with them.

  2. Helena, of course it will be. The government want this to pass. They are on the yes side. Coir, Youth Defence, Sinn Fein and few others dont want it to pass so their will be a debate.

The Referendum Commission will clarify issues but will not take part in the debate.

  3. Let the fun begin. Again.
