From the off, apologies for the apparent UKIP obsession. It’s just that apart from Labour in freefall (and I’m not going to bore you with that non-EU related drama here) the Euro elections have practically dropped off the radar.
Anyway, following up my post from this morning, UKIP leader Nigel Farage has stepped in to express his outrage at an apparent problem with ballot papers (though my hunch remains that UKIP will still be celebrating massive electoral success tomorrow).
This is the letter/ email he sent this afternoon….
MINISTRY OF JUSTICE
ATTN ELECTIONS MINISTER
Mr Michael Wills 102 Petty France
London
SW1H 9AJ
4 th June 2009
Re: today’s European Elections
We are outraged that today’s European Election have not been contested on a free and fair basis. We have been swamped with upset voters who failed to find us on the ballot paper. In many cases they have voted for other parties such as NO2EU and even the BNP.
The most serious cases are where ballot papers were machine folded and with a sharp crease. A good pair of fingernails were needed to prise open the last page. In the case of Yorkshire just UKIP was on the last page, in other areas up to four parties were disadvantaged.
We are now getting information from across the UK with a view to issuing a legal challenge to demand a rerun of the election.
When I called to speak to you and ask for an urgent meeting your office refused my request by saying that “This matter has already been handled”.
While people are still voting with ballot papers in this condition it has transparently not been handled.
In light of this your total refusal to meet me to resolve this crisis I think you are totally unfit to remain in office, as the Minister responsible for elections, and am thus demanding your resignation.
Nigel Farage MEP
UKIP Leader
It’s as if there’s no election today…
what election?
Local council elections today! Keep up, Etan!
Does Nigel Farage expect the Minister to just fold? Let’s see how matters unfold… my sense is that the UKIP complaints are unfounded if they are just below the fold… ok.. I’ll stop there…
