EPP to be the largest party?? Barroso to stay?

So Predict09 have their final prediction up. They have the European Groupings as follows:

  • EPP: 262 seats
  • PES: 194
  • ALDE: 85
  • UEN/EC: 53
  • Greens-EFA: 50
  • EUL/NGL: 40
  • Ind/Dem: 23
  • Non-inscrit: 30

To get Barroso elected President of the Commission, the EPP will need the support of more MEPs, but with the Spanish (20) , Portoguese (9), German (27) and UK (15) socialist bloc parties supporting him (figures are the predicted figures), and maybe bringing the new conservative grouping on side (UEN/EC) with 53 MEPs the EPP would have about 386 votes in the Parliament. Of course that is not including some of the the Non-inscrit members who could be persuaded to vote for Barroso.

Next week will see the start of meetings in “smoke-filled rooms” to try and coble together a majority in the parliament for the commission. Im sure a deal on President of the Parliament will be part and parcel of it.

It is an interesting result we are heading for, but will the prediction be accurate is the question?

  1. I’m very interested to see how UEN/EC does. Surely it’s going to have to ally with EPP to get anything done. What’s the point of splitting?

I have another Ireland question for you. I’m guessing FG are EPP… does that make FF ALDE?

  2. I agree on EPP - UEN/EC Josef, I dont see the point in splitting!

You would be correct is saying FG are EPP.

FF were UEN but recently joined ELDR so will be sitting with ALDE in the next parliament.

  3. It’s alphabet soup… :D

Let’s see what happens as more votes are counted.

  4. Alphabet soup alright! :)

I’d say that Barroso will be re-elected whether or not the EP has a left-wing tinge to it (when you count all the left- and right- wing seats). No doubt the UEN/EC will vote for Barroso, and I doubt a left-wing coalition could hold together long enough to change the Council’s mind.

Are the German socialists supporting him? I thought they were just resigned to a second Barroso term rather than backing him.

  6. Agree on left wing tinge.

As for SPD backing Borroso, I read they were, maybe I was wrong or the source was.
