So with just a week and a bit to election day here in Ireland, the elections have taken on a new importance for me. This is because I now face the same reality that a lot of Irish People are currently facing.
Last Thursday I was given my notice at work. So I am joining the 388,600 people on the Live Register in Ireland. This means that these election have grown in importance with me.
I have made no secret of the fact that I am a member of a political party here in Ireland, and now more then ever I want them to do well.
There is nothing like loosing your job to give you a kick and get back interested in politics. Some might say its a bit late then, but I think better late then never for getting involved.
The European Elections will make a change. They will set the course for how the EU and therefore Ireland rides out the recession. This has been highlighted by a number of political parties, including the Green Party, saying that European investment will create jobs.
Who knows what Parliament we will wake up to on June 8th, but hopefully its one that can steer us out of this.
Sorry to hear of your unfortunate experience, Stephen, now shared by far too many people in Ireland and throughout the EU. If we had used a fraction of the money we used to bail out the banks to save jobs the situation wouldn’t be half as bad. Perhaps your blogging can lead to a new career. I wish you the best of luck in getting a new job.
Thanks Frank.
Sorry to hear it!
EU election, Irish elections, does it nor remind you of the Zimbabwe electios under that other democrat Comrade Mugabe You will vote again, & again, & again until we have the result we want, now lets face it we are nothing but a province somewhere in europe with the unelected, overpaid socialist being the colonial masters , think about it
James,
Comparing the EU to Zimbabwe is a bit daft. There are no torture squads roaming the streets of Brussels. Eurosceptic party members are not being arrested or “disappearing.”
Argue where you are strong. Say that the EU is a bureaucratic mess. That it’s inefficient. I won’t always agree with you, but at least you can make a case.
But the EU reminds you of Zimbabwe? And the reason you give: “You will vote again, & again, & again until we have the result we want”
So…. the reason the EU reminds you of Zimbabwe is because people vote, repeatedly. So does the EU election remind you of American elections as well? Because people vote in those, you know. They vote many times. And the results aren’t always the same. And some people are happy with the results, and some people are unhappy.
Stephen,
I’m sorry you lost your job. I hope you find more work soon. Everywhere I look, the recession is starting to bite.
You are right, politics is more important now than ever.
@Anita @Josef thanks!
@James, ehhh no, your wrong. EU nothing like Zimbabwe like Josef said. We vote again because of our incompetent government who need to be sent a message.
Sorry to hear it; hopefully things will pick up for you.
(FG - and the next EP - better preform for you, considering how much canvassing you’ve been up to!)
