Owning Europe

It has been interesting to follow what is happening in Finland before the elections. The media seems to be more interested about the elections than before, and I don’t think there’s lack of information. There’s also a bus that drives through Finland to spread information about the elections. The parties have made a lot of effort to make a good campaign. The Center party for example has made a music-video to promote their candidates.

Eurooppanuoret, that is a member of JEF-Europe (Young European Federalists) launched a campaign to encourage young people to vote. The campaign is called Euroopan omistaja ”Owner of Europe”. The idea of the campaign is to show that we are all in Europe, and that’s why it’s important to vote to make Europe the way we want it to be.

I really do hope that this time people feel like – if not exactly owning Europe – atleast being an important part of it. The slogan ”owning Europe” is good, because when you own something, you normally take care of it. We should also do our best to take care of the Europe we own and share with all the europeans.

Most of the people seem to be interested in voting. But it could be that people have already something else in mind for the election day, for example, going to a summer cottage, or swimming. The beginning of summer is definitely not the best moment for the elections, atleast in Finland. Let’s hope for the best though.

There have also been some surprises.

When Pastor Mitro Repo, 50, known generally as Father Mitro, of the Orthodox congregation of Helsinki announced that he is to stand in June’s European Parliament election as a politically non-aligned candidate of the Social Democratic Party, it was clear that not everybody is ready to combine religion and politics in this way.

Maybe it is mostly because of these controversial candidates that the elections have had such an interst in the media, but it really seems that this time everybody is aware of the elections, which hasn’t necessarily been the case every time.

Some candidates have even made videos to make sure that even the eu-citizens living in Finland know exactly what to do, because it’s not always as easy as it seems:

  1. Hmm, am I the only one who thinks that candidates could be able to make more professional videos? Good that they inform, of course, but it looks more like some youth NGO doing rather than a serious candidate…

For me it rather seems a good video. It`s human in a way. The moving camera makes this man more closer to the voter.
Interesting post in general. Unfortunately i havent seen the young people encouraging to vote here in Finland.

Can I get a pair of that shiny earings :)?

P.S. I also kind of liked the video-not because of the quality, but agree with Marta: the man seems to be close to voters, also because of his way of talking.

Here’s more information about the bus-tour organized by the organization Eurooppalainen Suomi (European Finland).
It’s a blog about the tour (unfortunately only in finnish) but there are videos attached to the blog and photos, so you can get an idea of what it was like.
