I just got introduced with all the parties programs which are registered for upcoming EP elections in Latvia. Some of them made me laugh, some wonder but most of them just regret. Parties haven’t spend much time in writing the programs and in general EP elections are not dominating but the local municipality elections are. Seems that 8 well paid deputies places in EP are not worth to fight with tooth and nail. I would say it is. It is bringing credibility and experience to a party which is represented in EP.
I will not disclose which party i will support but i would like to show what impression the programs left on me and possibly to the other voters who would challenge themselves in reading the programs as well. There are two different standpoints appearing one from Latvian speaking and the other one from Russian speaking representatives. Another division could be - power parties and never elected parties (this is not correct division as every party should be given a chance).
Both of the party groups are promising to represent and protect these groups` interests and culture into a wider Europe. Most of the parties are willing to protect the environment we are living in and increase the use of the natural resources to develop the well being for the earth and Latvia. Parties are also commonly standing for investments in innovations, education and science, as well as for competitive employment market. Also regional development and equality for all the farmers in EU are the top stances in the party programs. Most of the parties are also willing to ensure Latvia`s and Europe`s independence from one countries energy resources , thus referring to Russia whose gas is dominating in EU. Limiting bureaucracy in EU institutions and in acceptance of its requirements is also a shared wish. Interesting that most of the parties are also proposing increased state monitoring over finance institutions. This suggestion is possibly appearing in relation with global crisis or “grand - trouble” how it is stylish to say nowadays in Latvia.
The rest of the guidelines are either very poor, specific to the party profile or rather popular phrases in EU context. They vary:
In reality almost nothing of this can be done by working in EP and the aims which could be influenced by EP are so broad that they are probably announced just because they sound good.
So i am suggesting to choose to vote for a party which is not racistic or any other way ignoring human rights like homosexuality; a party which is understanding what organization is EU and is supporting its aims as mobilization, integration, open labor market, etc.; a party which is regionally and economically thinking; for a party which is not giving just resonant promises but proposing barable suggestions.
Truly i am waiting when the first educated Erasmus generation will be taking power in EU - EP - and in local parliaments. I guess it will be extraordinary but very humanitarian as it will be understanding what is actually going on with this Europe. The politicians which have power nowadays can just speak of it but never have been able to experience it and understand what is it about. Another wish i am having, that after 5 years more educated politicians would candidate in elections. Its so irritating to vote for people with low education, unemployed and specializing in some irrelevant field.
“Truly i am waiting when the first educated Erasmus generation will be taking power in EU - EP - and in local parliaments.”
Totally agree!!! I got the same opinion when I was interviewing young Latvian candidates. Because of the opportunity to study and live abroad they now have a different look at EU.
Nice to hear so optimistic view on future.
Hopefully so that will be.
