Is it The Sun Wot’ll Win It?

Fits in nicely with our light bulb theme...

... and led them to claim the credit

Whenever I have any sort of chat about the British media with anybody from outside the UK, the first topic of conversation is invariably The Sun - and the world-notorious Page 3. And most people simply don’t get it. The most popular newspaper in this country and its top selling point is topless girls?

Well, there’s much more to The Sun than that. For at least the last decade and a half, it has liked to think that it can not only predict the results of elections, but actually decide them. On the day of the 1992 general election, it ran the headline “If Kinnock wins today will the last person to leave Britain please turn out the lights” that he blamed in his resignation speech for losing Labour the election. Two days later, it was so sure that its coverage had been the deciding factor that it heralded Kinnock’s defeat with the front page: “It’s The Sun Wot Won It”. Ever since, the tabloid has had a fabled reputation for being able to swing elections and make or break political careers (though they didn’t stop Kinnock from subsequently having a long career in Brussels).

Holy smoke: The Sun comes out for Labour in 2005

Holy smoke: The Sun comes out for Labour in 2005

Most recently, in a much anticipated announcement, it came out for Tony Blair and the Labour Party in 2005 by pumping some red smoke out of a chimney in homage to the election of the Pope in the same year.

So does the Sun have anything to say about the Euro elections? And if so, will it make a damn bit of difference?

In an editorial today, all is revealed. Although it has been making noises in support of David Cameron and the Conservatives, on the issue of Europe, Cameron is left out in the cold. But he’s not the only one. These are the highlights:

“Labour has surrendered all credibility by betraying its pledge to hold a referendum on the Constitution.”

“The Tories talk tough but send out conflicting messages.”

“Tiny Libertas offers hope after masterminding Ireland’s sensational NO vote against the Constitution last year.”

“UKIP just wants to pull Britain out of the EU altogether.”

“If the established parties have their way, the prospects for change in Brussels vary between fat chance and no chance.”

It says something about the wave of apathy washing over Britain that even The Sun can’t be bothered to throw its weight behind a party. But true to form, they may be bang on with their concluding - and characteristically bold - statement: “No wonder experts are predicting the lowest turnout in history on June 4.” Evidently, as far as Europe is concerned, The Sun’s not shining on anyone.

The old saying is: “The sun doesn’t care who wins the election, just so long as she’s got big tits.”

[Apologies for the crudeness of that quote, I blame Murdoch]
