“International Virus” of Europe

Ska Keller is 27 years old and goes for the Greens in the European Parliaments.

Why do you candidate for Europe?
European politics have always fascinated me. You come together with other people who work together according to their political orientation, not their nationality and realise their visions of Europe. The Greens in Europe are the political group with the most common features. Furthermore, it is interesting to be part of a parliament, that does not work traditionally in government and opposition.

What means Europe for you personally? Do you have a special experience you connect with Europe?
I am from the German Polish border and found it always weird that a border splits up a complete landscape. Moreover, I was early involved in the European Green Youth. I became passionate for Europe. We name this enthusiasm “international virus” of Europe.

Why should young people participate in the European elections?
Politics have a big influence on our Life. In particular questions that deal with the future such as the climate and financial crisis can only efficiently solved on European level. Furthermore, young people often have a more lively picture of Europe than their parental generation, because they were abroad and have friends in other countries. For our parents it was not self-evident to cross the border without controls. This lively young picture of Europe, which stands up for sustainable development should be represented in the European Parliament.

What does Europe for young people?
The EU put forwards many programs for young people to get to know other countries. In addition, the Erasmus programme is offered by the EU and is committed to achieve with the Bologna process that certificates get accepted all over Europe.

How do you imagine Europe in the future? Which will change?
I hope that there will be a Europe where people search together for sustainable solutions, instead of thinking in terms of national interests and next elections. Furthermore, I would like to have a Europe which is not only an economic space, but also a union of its European citizens. To this belongs, that we do not close our doors, but be open for Europe and stand up for it.

Do you more feel as European or German?
In my opinion you cannot feel citizenship. People have multiple identities, thus we can be European and German. My political home is in Europe.

Who could be the next European superstar?
I think Europe does not need the one European superstar. Europe needs several heads and hands that promote the peace project Europe. We should not wait for a star to do the work for us. We have to do it ourselves together.

Remark: It is no political intention that my blog presents only three candidates of two parties for the European Elections. I wrote several emails to ALL parties and mostly two candidates of each party, but they did not answer at all. For me no answer, is also an answer. It shows how important young voters are for these parties and how dedicated these politicians are for the campaign of the European Elections!
