Why Giulietto Chiesa is candidating from Latvia?

Ok, as I was writing in my previous post, I wanted to investigate why current Italian MEP Giulietto Chiesa is candidating this time to European Parliament (EP) elections from Latvia, not from Italy.

G. Chiesa is candidating from the socialist party - union “For human rights in a united Latvia”, which between the voters is known as the party for Russian speakers in Latvia. Its co-chairman Yakov Pliner told to the journalists that the main reasons for including the current MEP in their candidates’ list was the fact that he already has an experience in the EP, he is known outside Latvia and he is an experienced journalist, who has written several books, made a documentary and currently is not in any other political party.

Another newspaper is writing that already now in the EP G. Chiesa is supporting interests of Russian minorities. “There are no parties in Italy, who would cover my interests, therefore Tatjana’s [current Latvian MEP Tatjana Zdanoka - ed.] proposal seemed like a good idea. I feel like a citizen of European Union. The situation in Italy is not different from France, Czech Republic or Latvia. But there are a lot of questions Europe should be informed about, because in Italy, for example, a lot of people don’t know about problems of Latvia. That is a good example, which also others could use,” said G. Chiesa, who fluently speaks Russian as he was living in Russia before.

G. Chiesa confirms that if he’ll get elected he’ll learn Latvian language and soon he also plans to move to Latvia to have promotional campaign and meet the voters.

However, if you want to hear my opinon, G. Chiesa doesn’t have a big chance to get elected because Latvians for sure won’t like him as he is candidating from the party, which supports Russian minority in Latvia and would like Russian language to be the second official language in Latvia. Already now some bloggers are posting their negative thoughts about this situation and being completely against this idea.

The only chance G. Chiesa has is to get a support from those Russian speakers, who are eligible to vote in the EP elections. Knowing his close professional relationship with T. Zdanoka, I’d persume that voters, who are voting for T. Zdanoka will vote also for G. Chiesa and otherway around.

The era of small parties in Italy has finished.
Probably that’s why he migrated .
