No, this is not a beginning of a silly joke (if I wanted to say a silly joke, I would choose the one about a blonde and a brunette sitting in a room full of MEPs…). This is a statement that while there have already been songs being written on the swine flu, the elections are still songs-free. There are also official songs for football cups or Olympic Games (and in Slovakia even for anniversary of online land registry)—so why couldn’t the elections have one? Well, you might argue that there is this Ode to Joy as the anthem of EU, but this is something different: first, it is an old piece with even older lyrics, it was only adopted by EU, and not all the people have it linked with EU; second, though I like it a lot, it is not the kind of catchy song you are likely to sing in your mind while sitting at a bus stop or even dance to when you are alone at home. I’m not naive enough to propose writing a Macarena-like song with its own dance that would become the most popular disco hit and all the people from 5 to 99 years would know the choreography. Yet music has always had great impact on people, and a song that would be catchy, interesting, and would represent the idea of united Europe and importance of EU and voting (or just some of it, and not in the straightforward form like “I know the EU is important for me and you, I tell you in case you didn’t note, that is why in these European elections I will surely go and give my vote.”). Maybe next time representatives of European Parliament might ask a distinguished singer or band to write a song for elections, or they might run a songwriting contest for public. What do you think?

PS I don’t dare to run a songwriting subcompetition here, after the “success” of my last subcompetition…
