Even though this year our country is celebrating the Millenium of the Name of Lithuania, we still are new and fresh for today’s Europe. It’s been 19 years since Lithuania achieved independence from Soviet Union and only 5 years since we are a part of European Union.
Lithuania has to go a long way untill we become equal to Western Europe or Scandinavia countries. But we are taking steps forward. The most encouraging one is already taken - we elected the new president Dalia Grybauskaitė. Former Lithuania’s European Commsioner has a reputation of fair and dedicated politician - the one that every country needs for brighter future.
Another start line for Lithuania’s development will be crossed on the 7th June - on the day of the Elections. I know that our citizens won’t be very active and maybe only 30-40% of them would manage to vote. However, I like the fact that we will get NEW europarliamentarians.
Not because the old ones were bad (though some people in Lithuania says that they really were!). I just want a new beginning, something that could allow me to say: ‘Ok, that period was with a lot of trouble, but it has gone to past. Hooray for new start’
The mood in Lithuania is quite desperate now: a lot of people have lost their jobs, most of them don’t see the future optimistic. But such events as president elections or EP elections help them to think that ‘know the problems will be solved’. The new president will help us to stay strong in our country, but today’s Europe has got no boundaries. That’s why we have to think what is happening outside the Lithuania and that’s why we care about new europarliamentarians. Whoever they will be, they will stand as symbols for the new Lithuania. If not for all the country than for one small me.
