The right wing parties in Bulgaria are far from being united. I talked about four of them in an earlier post. Since then, another party has gained momentum - RZS (Order, Lawfulness and Justice). Its leader is Jane Janev and since it attracted a few parliament members of another party - SDS, it has taken up a lot of the media attention. They suggested the changes to the election law that many believe are engineered to lower the chances of the opposition and more specifically - GERB. That is why many believe they teamed up with the left parties BSP and DPS for a slice of the power cake after the Bulgarian parliament elections.
In the last few weeks another political scandal unfolded. Before registering for the EP elections, SDS had to formally register it’s new leader - Martin Dimitrov. The registration however was overruled by the court. Despite that decision was in its turn overruled after an appeal for “nearly unlawful faults in the procedure”, the slow work of the judicial system and delayed hearings made it impossible for SDS to register as a party with it’s new leader in time and join DSB in the “Blue Coalition”. Martin Dimitrov has openly stated that DPS is putting pressure on the court in order to stop the supporters of SDS to vote.
Meanwhile, the old leader of SDS - Plamen Yurukov, who is still in the books as a leader of SDS, has made several attempts to undermine the coalition with DSB. Eight years ago, SDS and DSB were one party, but due to a loss in the parliament elections back then and other disagreements, many members of both parties hate each other. The former leader of SDS is one of them and probably that’s why he lost his position. P. Yurukov however made a move that many believe is again dictated by BSP - he registered SDS for the EP elections behind the back of all other members. Officially, he can do that since the court has not decided on the party leader registration. There is however one crucial problem - he doesn’t have some important financial documents and it’s impossible to make a copy. They are in the elected leader of SDS.
And here is where all the circus broke loose - two hours ago the Bulgarian election commission accepted P. Yurukov’s registration despite the missing documents. A few days ago everyone agreed that is impossible. Today however, BSP, DSB, Ataka and others voted in favor of Yurukov’s registration. The interesting bit here is that three hours before that, SDS and DSB registered the “Blue Coalition” only with the party papers of DSB. DSB agreed to keep the format of the coalition out of solidarity. This is an interesting case of political trickery and the only result is that the voters are confused. I guess that this is whole idea anyway. I asked P. Yurukov in Facebook if he think that his actions will help SDS in the elections and he said that he will answer me after his birthday, which was yesterday.
On the other side of the political fence, social researchers have reported that the assumed involvement of BSP in these events and more notably - their own ad campaign, have shaved almost 2% off of their approval ratings, which are now at 15.4%. In their ad, BSP states that they created new 300000 jobs and increased the pensions and salaries a few times. Probably the voters see it as ridiculous and thus the ad has an opposite effect. In the same pools, GERB keeps stable 30% approval and 58% of all voters say they will definitely vote on the EP elections.
