A Joint Party to Celebrate the Elections? 6 Days to Go!

One week is not a lot of time to organise a group effort. Ideally, it takes time to plan and arrange these things. It’s typical of me to leave everything to the last minute and then scrape something together right at the end. On the plus side, it gives things a sort of mad, chaotic energy that I love.

First up: if you have a skype account and you’re interested in letting me interview you on the day of the elections, please e-mail your username to me at citeur@gmail.com. I would love to put together some podcasts interviewing people from across Europe about what they are seeing in their countries, what their media is saying, how people are voting, if there is a buzz in the air or if everything is totally dead. If you’re not interested in giving a Skype interview, but you would still be willing to interview by e-mail or instant message, then that would also be welcome. Or, if you don’t want to interview but are still willing to help out, get in touch anyway!

Second: seriously start thinking about how you will blog these elections. Some people have begun voting already (by post) but the vast majority (if “vast majority” is ever really a phrase that can be applied to EU elections) will vote next weekend. Consider staying up late to watch the media coverage, computer to hand. Think of interesting and novel things you can do. If you have a webcam or a microphone, think about setting them up and making use of them.

Third: by some strange fluke (or sinister conspiracy), the EU elections happen to fall on June 6th. This will be the 65th anniversary of the D-Day landings, the invasion of Normandy when the liberation of Europe kicked off. If nothing else, this is an excuse to celebrate together our freedom from dictatorship. You may not like the EU and you may think it deeply flawed… but it is not a fascist or a communist tyranny.

Fourth: by some strange fluke (or sinister conspiracy), June 6th also happens to be my birthday. I’ll be having a party to celebrate. It might be fun if you could get in touch with your friends and also arrange parties on the evening of Saturday June 6th and Sunday June 7th. A joint party to celebrate the end of the competition, to celebrate 65 years since D-Day, to celebrate the EU elections, to celebrate my birthday (maybe not), to celebrate whatever you want to celebrate. If your country will be voting on June 7th, then hold your party on June 7th.

I’m not sure how much blogging you’ll actually get done at a party – but it gives you a room full of people to interview, access to a TV to check what the media is saying, and an excuse to drink and have a good time! Anyway – now is enough time to arrange this party. So get in touch with your friends tonight by SMS text message or phone. You’ve been blogging for 118 days – you should have a party to celebrate this!

So after you finish reading this post, start calling your friends!
