Slovakia- We know who, we don’t know why

It’s kind of tradition in electoral campaigns (not only) in Slovakia to rely upon names instead of ideas. We have approx. two months till elections and all that political parties have already done is that they have chosen their candidates. No agendas, no visions, no ideas.

According to new rules, Slovakia will have 13 MEPs in new Parliament. Now we officially have 17 political parties running for elections.

Not a single party which are currently represented in Slovak parliament have addressed potential voters with their agendas, all they have been able to do was to pick candidates (and in some cases it confirms that the seat in EP is just a kind of reward for longstanding party allies and friend). Of course, one can presage what candidates (or better told parties) might think about some of the problems, comprehensive attitudes towards current European politics, issues and the role of European Parliament are still missing.

There is one reason: several last weeks parties had been concentrated on presidential elections, which ended last weekend. So now it should be the right time to show what they propose. But this approach (”we will deal with it when we have some spare time”) might be one of the reasons of the lowest turnout last time, five years ago.

National agenda dominated last elections, parties usually don’t have people (not to mention experts, who could also have some political affiliation), who would in the long term invest their energy in European affairs, and who would “interpret” European policies and politics to voters.

Recent experience with presidential elections shows, that neither this nor future elections in Slovakia will be about cardinal questions, which are actually associated with concrete type of elections. Instead, there are fabricated vicarious problems, which do not reflect reality and bend it accordingly to PR needs and public opinion researches.

There still are two months of campaign (at least I hope there will be some in here), so maybe I will be surprised. It would be the better alternative.
