Let’s face it, we always talk like people in government are like one big mafia family. Some of them get caught in corruption scandals, others – pass legislation, which will helptheir relatives or family members, etc. In Lithuania people simply say: “All politicians are thieves”. You can agree or not, but how would you react knowing, that within the EP a killer is at work?
But before that – some history. Almost 18 years ago, on 1991 July 31st, Lithuanian custom workers were attacked by Russian Special Purpose Police Squad (called OMON). 7 custom officers were killed and only one of them Tomas Šernas survived the tragedy.
The case is already 18 years old, but because of Russian government’s attitude toward case, it still can’t be solved (despite that some of the suspects are already jailed.) And one of them decided to become member of European Parliament.
Konstantin Michailov is already on the candidate list in Latvia. Michailov is the member of pro-russian party “Za rodinu!” (eng. “For nation!”). His lawyer in Lithuania Arūnas Marcinkevičius also confirmed information: “He has a full right to be candidate to the EP, you can check the laws. And I can sure confirm – it’s not a joke, it’s a fact”.

But what would happen if Michailov is elected? EP member from Lithuania Aloyzas Sakalas, who is also a member of legal affairs committee in EP, says that despite voters’ willingness, Michailov’s political immunity can be cancelled if Lithuania reacts fast and introduces committee with a case and all the evidence.
It would be the first time Baltic countries are asking to cancel members immunity, but on the other hand committee is deciding on MEPs immunity quite often”, Aloyzas Sakalas says.
If you would look to the present Lithuanian Parliament you could find some politicians who committed some crimes (from driving drunk to not paying taxes), but isn’t a killer in parliament a bit too much?
