When I came today to the spanish version of the Parliament website, I found an interesting article about key issues that the Parliament has been working on, and which can be decided through the vote in the next elections in June. This led me to think about how important can be just one vote for the results. It’s not only that your vote will give one politician the victory, but your vote will help to orientate the policy making in one or other direction you would prefer. Remember, “every vote counts“
The list of issues mentioned in the article includes the following ones:
-Equal opportunities for man and woman, in aspects like same salary for the same work
-Migration, which is getting more and more important and challenging for the EU. This issue is specially one to be dealt in the Parliament, cause it requires a coordinated answer of the countries.
-Budget and costumers’ protection, which should mean fighting against discrimination, assuring security and promoting employment, as well as cooperation with Third World countries and development. The Members of the European Parliament (MEP) have the possibility to fix the budget of its Chamber. That means, with the vote, you can decide who is going to fixe the followings amounts of money designated to different needs. On the other hand, the protection of costumers is today a big issue to be regarded, taking into account the increase of violations of costumers’ rights or the lack of information. This is a task to be developed by MEPs, and again, between 4th and 7th june, you will have the power to choose who will decide about that.
-Energy, security, financial crisis. Global warming, energetic resources, climate change…the new challenge consists in making our EU less dependent of energetic imports, and look for other sources, new ones. Every citizen has the choice for the MEPs that can look for the better way to this energetic renewal. Not only energetic security, but also human security is one of the priorities of the EU, and the European parliament is working to protect fundamental rights of its citizens. But do the citizens consider that it’s enough what’s being done till now? Should we improve in such field? The financial crisis is the third point in this issue. Economic instability menaces personal security in terms of economic capacity to survive and develop a normal living standard. How are the new MEPs going to cope with the crisis?
-Harmonized standards. At the same time that the EU promotes mobility among its members, a minimum of standards have to be guaranteed to make mobility without barriers really possible.
-Food security. New MEPs will go on with the task of labelling all products to keep costumers informed about what they buy, especially for products coming from other members.
On the website of the European Parliament we can find special reports about the tasks being developed by the current MEPs. This information can give voters a wide image why it is extremely important to join the elections between the 4th and 7th June.
And finally, just to illustrate the idea of how important can be just one vote, I want you to watch this video called “Can One Vote Change A Presidential Election?”, published on Youtube during the Presidential Elections in the USA.
