Giulietto Chiesa: Conspiracy theorist and MEP (still)

The Italian Socialist MEP Giulietto Chiesa told his supporters at the end of March that he would not be a candidate for this year’s election. Not a candidate in Italy, that is. Instead, he plans to run for the party representing the Russian minority in Latvia, the Union For Human Rights in United Latvia.

The majority of Latvians may feel, however, that Chiesa will be a mixed blessing for their democracy. “Russia did precisely what had to be done” was his verdict on last year’s conflict between Russia and Georgia. Not a surprising statement by a former Italian communist, perhaps, but not one that would reassure those Latvians fearful of their authoritarian neighbour, either.

Chiesa’s love of Russia is balanced by his hatred for the USA and his most memorable contribution to international relations so far has been his call for an international tribunal to examine the terror attacks on New York and Washington DC that took place on 11 September 2001. He senses a conspiracy, in other words. The vehicle for his theory is a slick and nauseating piece of filmed 9/11 truthism called ZERO that employs such famed structural engineers as Dario Fo to explain why the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center collapsed.

On 26 February last year, Guilietto Chiesa held a screening of ZERO in the European Parliament building in Brussels. The 9/11 Blogger, an enthusiastic fellow traveler, recorded this exchange afterwards:

Question: ‘Why do we put up with this? Surely the United States are not all that powerful?’

Chiesa: ‘But they are. The fact that this group of about 300 people has only 6 Europarlementarians and 2 journalists among them shows that the US is controlling everything. They are all powerful. No politician in the European Parliament can ignore the power – or wrath! – of the US.’

Will the voters of Latvia make the same mistake as their Italian counterparts and elect this clearly deranged person to the European Parliament for another five years?

Great conclusion! We italians won’t miss Mr Chiesa at all! :P

  2. Andrea G.B. says:

    I agree with Max.

  3. I predict that no, he won’t be elected. Simply because there are also other candidates what Russian speakers will vote for - and Latvians will never vote for him themselves.
