When danes aim high

AFR

The danish prime minister since november 2001 - the liberal Anders Fogh Rasmussen - hasn’t been home in danish Politics for months, it seems - lobbying for the job as general secretary of NATO.

I don’t know if it’s common knowledge to other europeans that he’s seeking this job - though he denies it - but in Denmark; God ! The medias haven’t been talking of anything else for months. It’s as if he’s going to apply for the job as Pope . And then the Turks have objections , mainly because of the Muhammed Cartoons back in 2005-2006

Actually , it’s not his first choice as international leader: he was hoping to get the seat as the first EU-President, but then the irish voters said: No thank You to the Constitution !

I’m actually as european quite happy that he didn’t get the chance to run for that presidency ; Anders Fogh Rasmussen isn’t a visionary EU-thinker like i.e. Spinelli but more the conservative kind of: “EU is OK as it is - don’t try to make it more federalistic. ”

But what I really would like to know: what do other europeans think about Anders Fogh Rasmussen . NATO is no an EU-institution, I’m fully aware of that ;-) - but it’s important in Europe .

Do you really care about this politician from the cold North and what his visions for the Alliance is?

  1. I’m surprised Anders Fogh regards the NATO job as more important than the Danish PM job.

Most previous holders of the post have been generals or foreign ministers but I can’t remember a Prime Minister other than Paul-Henri Spaak of Belgium going for it.

Many would also argue that NATO is gradually declining in importance in the post Cold War era as the EU develops its own foreign and security structures (under Lisbon) and the US focuses more on the middle east and Asia.
