Happy March 8th to everyone. While the list is still long when it comes to the struggle for gender equality (political representation, violence against women, etc.), the case for equal pay has been disregarded by politicians across EU for too many years. The arguement is allways the same: “Gender-based distrimination on payments will disappear over time as women increase pressence on the job market”.
Well, we have been listening to this for decades, but studies are now coming out indicating that though some countris do actually move towards more equal pay, others stagnates (Denmark and Finland) and Sweden and Austria even experience a growing inequality in pay between men and women. This video describes some of the dynamics involved in the gender based pay discrimination, but also shows the lack of political will to challenge the issue through comprehensive enforcement of the current anti-discrimination legislation:
Politicians who still refuse to interfeer politically to eliminate pay-discrimination towards women therefore need a serious reality check from the voters! This should be a BIG issue at the election in June. Looking towards the US, where the gender pay-gap is a big issue as well notice how Obama made it a key priority in last years election:
Lets not let the candidates forget their responsabilities to secure womenspay and rights at the polls in June.
