Sometimes it feels like politicians consider cyberspace a land of its own where conventions on privacy and integrity doesn’t need to be respected as in the off-line world. Take Finland’s parlament who is soon expected to take steps to introduce the so-called “Lex Nokia”, which will allow Finnish companies, including the mobile phone maker Nokia, to spy on the data of their employees’ email messages. Nokia was apparantly the initiater of the bill and some have suggested that Nokia even thretened to leave Finland if the bill is not passed, and so it appears like the law will go through.
Currently Finnish civil rights groups are trying to remind the government of the wording of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, article 12, which quite clearly states that:
No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honor and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks.
Youtube is allready filled with responses from privacy groups who are up in arms against the bill. Here is one of the videos
I am not truly aware of the position of the EU Parlament on privacy. Are they trying to set up some minimum standards as many countries seem to be engaged in the race towards the bottom? A common initiative is much needed before we all learn to live with the fact that states and companies check out our email as they like.
Dude, if you’re going to post native language clips, please take the small trouble of subtitling!
Hi Simon,
Sorry. Forgot to mention that I don’t speak Finnish. The video though speaks a little for itself. If anyone with Finnish language skills comes around feel free to post the translated message
