
As of March 31 2009, 1251 bodies have signed up for the voluntary register launched by the European Commission June last year for lobbyists seeking to influence its policymaking. 717 of those are professional associations and NGOs. 177 companies have signed up.
While no one knows the actual number of lobbyists active in Brussels, Administration and Anti-Fraud Commissioner Siim Kallas has cited a figure of 15,000 lobbyists.
The voluntary register was launched in the context of the wider European Transparency Initiative.
The European Commission is testing the register for one year. A review is expected this summer.
The European Parliament has called for a mandatory register common to all three EU institutions.
