It’s great to be a member of The European Commision when you are from such a small country as Lithuania. You have a secure job in a secure place; your salary is never delayed and is always high. And what tempts the most, you don’t have very much to do. Of course, you have responsibilities, but they are not in a matter of life and death. There are 26 other guys - most of them are more important for EU than you (don’t forget, you are from small country!). If something goes wrong they are the first to blame, not you.
OK, now you are fascinated with an idea to become a Member of European Commision, but you still have some doubts. ‘If I am a MEC I must leave my country for such a long time. I’m gonna miss it!’, you say. Yes, that’s true, but don’t get so wrought-up. After your term of office is end you can go back to your homeland and, for example, become the No. 1 person there. Let’s imagine: when you were spending time at EC, the political situation in Lithuania changed in a completely negative way. Local politicians lost people’ trust and now they need a hero, a person that could give them a will for a better life.
Are you brave enough to be that Messiah? Dalia Grybauskaitė is and she will prove that in May, when Lithuania presidential elections will be held. This woman has spent last five years in Brussels, being a member of the European Commision. However, majority of lithuanian voters know mostly nothing about what she was doing all this time. If they don’t know nothing that means tehy don’t know nothing bad. That’s why they think: D. Grybauskaitė is the best candidate, because other ones are worse than worst (thanks our news media for such an opinion).
Question: would the situation be the same if D. Grybauskaitė have been spending last five years in Lithuania, not in Belgium?
Answer: I’m absolutely sure that Lithuanian people would think different, if our MEC wouldn’t be MEC. News media would have smashed down her as it did to many of candidates for presidential elections. But when a politician spends his/her life far away from homeland, he/she is protected from news media attacks of his own country. Yes, those attacks will start now and won’t end until some Mr. or Ms. will be elected. However, it’s a bit too late: D. Grybauskaitė already has more supporters, than any other candidate has. The fact that she was a member of European Commision helped her to create a positive image of herself. And who knows - maybe that fact will help her to become a President of our country.

I wouldn’t be against it.
