Homosexuality and adoption

holding hands
Today news got out in the Netherlands that a regional French government continues to block the adoption of a child by a lesbian couple, although the European Court of Human Rights had previously ruled against this. This ruling was the first against one of the founders of the Council of Europe, which started the court.

In my opinion, equal rights for gay couples are no more than normal. Someone’s sexual orientation has nothing to do with, for example, parenting skills. According to the newspaper, the couple has received positive advices regarding the adoption from both psychologists and social institutions. This, in combination with the ruling of the ECHR, apparently still isn’t enough for the short-sighted French regional government. It appears that there exists some strange construction where straight couples and singles, and gay singles can adopt a child, but a gay couple can’t. Wow. Talk about complicated.

I realise that in the Netherlands we are quite liberal when it comes to gay rights. Any homosexual couple can get married (although civil servants can choose not to marry gay couples), can adopt a child and virtually has the same rights as any straight couple or person. The fact that even after the ECHR had decided against the blocking of the adoption, it was not allowed to go through, is preposterous I think.

In a related note: how would Wim van de Camp, the homosexual leader on the EP election list for the Dutch Christian Democrats, feel about this…?

I believe that gay couples have the right to adopt a child.

But I’m even more bothered about the rights of the child - i.e. the right to not live in a squalid children’s home.

Nobody can ignore the lack of available foster parents, facilities and support for orphans. Even somebody who thinks that gay people are worse parents should see that its better than a children’s home, or the streets at night.

    Great post Simon!

    Simon,
I find it really great that you opened this topic and write your opinion so naturally (and live in a country where there isn’t the atmosphere of conservatism and fear of anything new or minor…) You’ve inspired me to start writing a post about this topic in terms of Slovakia-if you’re interested, check my posts in a few days. :)

@radovana surely will!! however, xenophobia is on the rise in holland as well; polls claim the PVV, the party of Geert Wilders (of a.o. the film “Fitna”) holds a lead… So much fear and ignorance.. Bummer.
